Examination Guidelines
To ensure the professional uniformity, transparency, and verifiability of ISTQB member organisations and examination centres, HTB adheres to the ISTQB Examination Guidelines (ISTQB Examination Guideline).
The organisation, conduct, and supervision of the examination process fall entirely and exclusively within the scope of HTB's authority. HTB is not authorised to conduct examination preparation courses, which guarantees objective examination.

The HTB conducts Foundation Level, Advanced Level (Test Automation Engineer, Test Manager, Test Analyst and Technical Test Analyst), Expert Level (Test Management and Improving the Test Process) and Specialist (Agile Tester, Agile Technical Tester, Scaling Agile Test Leadership, Model-Based Tester, Usability Testing, Automotive Software Tester, Mobile Application Testing, Performance Testing, Acceptance Testing, Gambling Industry Tester, Security Tester, Test Automation Strategy, AI, Game Testing and Security Test Engineer) exams.

After successfully passing exams in three modules - Test Manager (TM), Test Analyst (TA), and Technical Test Analyst (TTA) - which can be taken separately, upon request, HTB issues a "Full Advanced" level certificate.
Foundation Level Exam Content
Exam Structure
  • 40 multiple-choice questions
  • Each correct answer 1 point
  • Maximum score: 40 points
  • For a successful exam: 65% (26 points)
Exam Duration
  • In native language: 60 minutes
  • In foreign language: 75 minutes
The Foundation Level exam module also has a separate syllabus and an exam structure aligned with it.

Advanced Level Exams
For all three modules, the candidate must achieve at least a 65% result to pass the exam. Correct answers are worth 1, 2, or 3 points. There are no penalty points for incorrect answers.

All exams are in English and consist of two parts: a multiple-choice test and two essay questions. A 65% pass mark is required to pass the exam. The Expert Level is the only exam that is not valid for life, but for 5 years, after which the exam can be renewed.
Practical Tester Additional Module

The additional module includes a practice platform, which provides an opportunity for practical development of testing competencies and preparation for the exam.

Ensuring Equal Opportunity
There is no discrimination among applicants. Within reasonable limits, applicants may request special considerations, which will be assessed by the competent professional leader of HTB. The applicant will be informed of the decision via email within 15 working days.

Important Deadlines: In the event of an equity request received within 15 working days before the start of the examination, the competent professional leader of HTB will make the assessment as soon as possible. HTB is unable to accept requests submitted on the working day preceding the examination or on the day of the examination.

An informational email will be sent out 7 calendar days before the exam, containing the necessary information and drawing attention to the technical requirements for participation.
Online Exam Conditions (Remote Invigilation Exam)

General Regulations

Location Check The invigilator will check the exam location with a camera before the start. Exam Recording The entire exam (webcam, audio, screen recording) will be recorded. Irregularity Log The invigilator will keep a timestamped log of any irregularities. Prohibition of Aids No aids may be used during the exam. Mobile Phone Usage Mobile phones outside the examination system must be switched off. Clear Desk Policy No objects other than those required by the examination system are allowed on the desk. Leaving the Room Leaving the room is prohibited during the examination; otherwise, the exam will be interrupted and deemed unsuccessful. Unsuccessful Exam If the above conditions are not met, the exam will be unsuccessful, and there will be no free retake due to technical errors.

Technical Requirements

Windows Operating System Current version of Windows 10/11.Warning: An operating system used in a corporate environment is often insufficient due to rules that prevent the proper functioning of the examination system. Memory Minimum 8 GB. Screen Resolution Minimum 1280 x 720 pixels. Unlimited Internet Connection Minimum 50 Mbit/s download and 25 Mbit/s upload bandwidth.Warning: Internet connections restricted by firewalls or VPNs are insufficient. Internet Browser Current version of Google Chrome. Smartphone Android or iOS based. Webcam External or built-in webcam. Microphone External or built-in microphone.

Local Supervised Examination
Locally supervised examinations have numerous technical and behavioural conditions that ensure the integrity and appropriate circumstances of the examination.
General Conditions
  • Identification: Valid photo ID issued by an authority (e.g., identity card).
  • Dictionary: Printed dictionary allowed for English or German language exams (checked by invigilator).
  • Invigilator ratio: Maximum 1 invigilator per 30 candidates.
  • Preliminary check: HTB ensures technical and other conditions (4.2.1.A).
  • Rules briefing: The invigilator verbally explains the rules (4.2.1.B) before the exam.
Examination Environment Requirements (the examiner is responsible)
Distances
  • Minimum 2 m between the first row and the board.
  • Minimum 1 m between rows of desks.
  • Minimum 1.5 m between candidates sitting next to each other.
Desk Surface
Minimum 60cm x 90cm.
Silence and Noise Level
Silence, low noise level during the exam. In case of significant noise (e.g., construction, air conditioning), a decision on acceptability is made with the involvement of the candidates. In case of objection, a new location is designated at the expense of the venue provider.
Visibility and Lighting Conditions
Adequate lighting. In case of objection, a new location is designated at the expense of the venue provider.
Recommended Conditions and Rules of Conduct
  • Soft drinks (water, soda) in sealed glass bottles are permitted.
  • Easily adjustable temperature (air conditioning/heating).
  • Large, clearly visible clock in the room.
Rules of Conduct
  • Candidates accept the conditions of the venue.
  • Only approved printed dictionaries may be used.
  • Mobile phones switched off.
  • Candidates may not communicate with each other.
  • Bags and coats are not allowed on the desks.
  • Scratch paper is provided by the invigilator.
  • The start of the exam and the remaining time (10 minutes before the end) are announced by the invigilator.
  • Leaving the room is not permitted during the exam, and there is no re-entry.
  • Toilet use with the invigilator's permission, after submitting the exam paper.
  • Exam materials (paper, answer sheet, scratch paper, electronic devices) may not be taken out.
